In the mid 1990's The Freedom Shop had just opened in Upper Cuba Street selling local and overseas books, zines and music. Lower Hutt spat out bands like Diecast and Walking Groin Infection introducing a new generation to Thistle Hall gigs in the 1990's. There were a bunch of zines being published (No School, Vericose, Help My Snowman's Burning) as well as the tongue in cheek 04 Hardcore straightedge crew.

Wellington punk culture was alive and snotty during the 1990's with Punkfest established in 1996, bringing in bands from around the country and overseas, until the event moved down to Christchurch in 2011.
